If I owned a grocery store and worked as a clerk,
I would have opened my door and let you inside my shop
And shown you what was for sale since you’d decided to stop.
But then as you stole my heart and quickly dashed away
I simply would have yelled behind, “Have a nice day.”
If I was a vehicle repairman who was hard at work,
And you brought me a worn-out heart from a gallant past chase
I would have offered you mine, hoping yours wouldn’t go to waste.
But then as you sped off, breaking my heart in every way
I simply would have yelled behind, “Have a nice day.”
If I was a jeweler, hiding a gem from those who lurk
And you sweetly said you would keep my heart protected,
I would have blindly handed it to the leader I had elected.
But then as you sprinted off and dropped my heart by the washed-up bay
I simply would have yelled behind, “Have a nice day.”
If I was a waitress whose service you saw as a perk,
I would have been sure to give what you ordered and a little more,
And then handed a bill for the heart you should have worked for.
But then as you departed and left the mess without any pay
I simply would have yelled behind, “Have a nice day.”
If only I wasn’t a foolish girl who didn’t see you were a jerk,
I would have been smart enough from the start
To see that a play only works when everyone does their part.
And as you built yourself up, I would have seen the building strife
And rejecting your business, I’d have said then what I’m saying today:
“Have a nice life.”
