Life is full of moves:
Big moves,
Small moves,
And Everything in between.
Today we packed boxes
Filled with cards, paintings, & photos
From our last four years.
Walls once filled with artwork,
Scribbled pictures from when family was young
And gifts we gently pack away
So we can look back, while smiling on.
This home has been just what we needed
Over the past four years of our lives.
But we choose to move on
Because of our hope;
Our work to see a larger future steadily rise.
Last summer, I moved and organization
Into what we saw as a safer home.
Last December, we gave that business
A place to finally grow.
This winter, I knew the place I had so stubbornly defended
Was no longer the body to lead or call my own.
Six years ago now,
I made a choice to come back
To the place I still call home;
Education, loved ones, & dreams
Leading me and guiding me to where
I wouldn’t ever truly be alone.
Ten Years ago, I graduated
And thought I knew it all;
Filled with ideas, ambitions,
And a stubbornness (maybe a pride)
Which would get me through each night
When I felt I was alone.
Over these last ten years,
Relationships have blossomed; some have wilted;
Some still survive; and some have died.
But each relationship has helped me make
A change- a move- I wouldn’t otherwise realize.
So now, we pack up all these boxes again.
The pictures have been added.
The memories have been built
And the melancholy has grown.
But in all these boxes are not just things:
They hold mementos of all the lessons, changes, and time
Which experience let elapse.
In two weeks, we—not I-
Will move back to the rural landscape.
And in fourteen short days,
We will be in a new house
Which we will slowly make our home.
We will grow into that house
Just as we have grown to grasp
Every past place which became a home.
It is time for another move.
I suspect it may be one of the
Most important moves yet.
Through this move, we reach for a fuller life
And we work to create a home
Which we will always call our own.
