I was never going to be in this spot
I had it all figured out in my head:
An idea of a girl who wouldn’t need to learn a lot
And whose story I saw when I went to bed
She was going to be a heroine
Who had all that mattered figured out
A girl that bumped into a gentleman
Who fought until he had sought her out
She was going to be the peasant
Who showed the prince all that he could do
A girl who didn’t ask where a clock’s time went
And who didn’t have pain as she tried on the shoe
She was going to be the lover
Who would never leave or watch her hero go
A girl that wasn’t scared to grow closer
But wouldn’t wait for what he wouldn’t show
She was going to be the lady
Who knew her knight would love her to the end
A girl not surprisingly unlike me
Who wouldn’t realize her heart had been on lend
Back then I knew she was going to be me
I saw how time would make it bloom
I really thought that love could be for free
And I didn’t wonder how people could change so soon
But now I’m where she would never come
Wondering how things ever became so wrong
And I know this chapter isn’t quite done
As I write that girl a different kind of song
A song where love doesn’t always win
And a hero’s white turns grayer everyday
A song surprised at where it’s been
But a real song- a sad song- a happy song- a beautiful song
I can’t help but continue to play.
