That day I proudly displayed:
A blue, plaid dress,
Pig tails to fix my hair
Which was usually a mess;
A loose basket
Hanging from my arm
Which I tossed and swung around
Much to my mom's alarm;
White frilly socks over my toes
To keep them warm
As we ran around the highs and lows.
And, oh, how I adored those lovely ruby flats.
Still, they got tossed out in the cold.
But I loved that they were mine,
Even if they were left on a dirty mat.
I was Dorothy for that party,
Full of childhood imagination and joy.
But none of this stopped me
From wearing your sweats
When asked if I wanted
To play with the girls or with the boys.
