A Piece of the Past

I think I’m finally seeing clearly
Maybe I understand a little now
Of what happened between you and me

But it doesn’t mean it doesn’t kill
Because it still hurts deep inside
And I’m fighting against my own will

Now that I’ve let myself see the facts
I couldn’t hate you, even if I tried
Cause you were justified in your acts

Well, I guess you were in all but one:
How you made and let me come so close,
Though I’m not sure I regret what was done

Because though it’s hurting me at this time,
Hurting because of what we could be,
You’re someone I’d regret not to find

Maybe we were meant to be together
If we didn’t live inside this world
Where bigger problems are everywhere

I could keep on saying, “If only”
But there really isn’t any use
I’m fine without you and you without me

I want you to do what’s best for you
Which is for you and I to move on
And I can do what’s best for me too

I’m sorry for any pain I gave
I’m sorry for the pain you brought me
I’m sorry this is something we can’t save

I wish we could say that this was right
But it seems things are always in the way
And they’re only avoided if we lose our sight

So you’ll go your way and I’ll go mine
Because we can’t travel down the same path
I just hope someday you’ll leave my mind

I guess that we’re both complicated
This world is pretty confusing too,
Giving nothing to those who’ve waited

You were everything that I wanted
Though I’m not sure what I was to you
But in the end it’s not what we needed

I guess I’ve learned and will do better
And that all of this is just called life
But I hope in some way it did matter

So though it hurts me so very much
And I think it hurts you as well
We’ll let go of what we can never touch

Life will continue on as it has
I’ll move on and live to my fullest
(But in my heart)
I’ll always have a piece of the past.
