Cadence in My Chest

I feel like I’ve never been like this before
In a week, my world’s been flipped up-side-down
And in seven days I don’t care about my past
Or whether there’s ever anything more

My heart’s cadence in its chest can still catch
As I write you down in the back parking lot of a store
I wasn’t supposed to fall this summer- or ever fall again
But when you kiss me, I know I want to give you my best

I keep saying this is insane and unexpected and so fast
But driving and singing down the road with you
I realize I could travel this pathway for a long time
And the trip wouldn’t seem too long if it could just last

The days I’ve spent with you are now
Some of the best days I’ve ever had
And every time you tell an unexpected joke
I’m reminded to inhale a deeper breath somehow

Now, since the library, it’s been two weeks to the day
You’re like a book I can’t set down for fear I’ll lose my place
You’re a chapter I hope grows longer and I pray time won’t erase
I’ve fallen for you; I know it; and I know what I want to say

You came along to show me I don’t have romance figured out
And that people can still give when they’ve been run through
You’ve made me open up when I had long since shut down
You’ve given me hope in the midst of all my doubt

Maybe this is over the top or out of line
But I need to write this down now—while I can
Because we both know time won’t speed us up or slow us down
It might seem crazy, but I’m yours if you’re mine

We don’t have that much longer before you leave again
But I’ll be right here waiting for the day you return
I won’t run away or leave, because at this point I can’t turn back
I’ll hold your words close as we leave behind where we’ve been

I guess what I’m trying to say is I wrote this for you
And with this ink goes my heart and the words I dare say
You come back for me when you can; I’ll still be your girl
There’s nothing left to say: But “I Love You.”
