The backdrop tells me so much is wrong
In this world turned upside down
By an off-key verse in the midst of a song
To which we thought we carried the tune
When we’ve really been off-beat all along.
But sometimes in the middle of a crescendo,
We need a pause to emphasize the beauty of the sound
Of the buildup to everything we still don’t know.
The mystery of the silence can carry us instead
To a higher note as we ricochet from the lowest low.
The hum of this melody may replace all my previous plans
And the climax of this moment may overshadow all other notes.
But there is hope in the chords which may at times cut our hands
As the rise and fall of this augmented theme
Gives me new strength in the good to be found wherever we land.
