Forward

How can we move forward with so much animosity,

So much disillusionment, so much tribalism,

So much hate?

We create bills, push forward legislation

Along the lines of a two-party system

That has forgotten the “united”

In “united we stand.”

We claim to support the right to vote.

We claim to secure voter safety.

We claim to protect the nation’s health.

We claim to protect freedom of choice.

But all of us have muted these claims

With screams that the only words that matter,

The only truth that can be accepted–

The only way forward–

Can possibly be found in one side’s voice.

We keep painting our nation as black and white,

Blue vs. red,

Bad vs. good,

Bastards vs. Enlightened…

When we are all really a little of both.

We claim to support the nation as a whole,

But we refuse to compromise,

To engage in discourse,

To consider the great mound of common ground

We all stand on.

The way forward cannot be along party lines.

A brighter future cannot be reached

By slamming legislation through with just one side.

Our United States cannot remain

If we refuse to come together;

If the only option we ever see

Is what half our country wants,

If we ignore half of what our country needs.

We cannot move forward with so much animosity,

So much disillusionment, so much tribalism,

So much hate…
